A Century of Change: How Willmotts Has Evolved with the Industry
Logistics is an industry that never stands still. Customer expectations change. Regulations tighten. Volumes grow. Complexity increases.
The businesses that last aren’t the ones that shout the loudest - they’re the ones that adapt, invest, and keep doing the basics properly as the world around them changes.
That has been the story of Willmotts.
For more than 100 years, Willmotts has evolved alongside the logistics industry itself - not by chasing trends, but by responding to what customers genuinely need and what the job demands.
Where It Started
Founded in 1918 in Wells, Somerset, Willmotts began as a regional transport business built on straightforward principles: reliability, responsibility, and pride in doing the job properly.
In the early days, logistics was simpler. Fewer systems. Fewer regulations. Fewer moving parts.
What mattered then (and still matters now) was trust. Turning up. Delivering as promised. Taking ownership when things weren’t straightforward.
Those foundations continue to shape the business today.
An Industry That Has Changed - and Keeps Changing
Over time, the logistics landscape has transformed.
Supply chains have become more complex. Volumes have increased. Customers expect visibility, accuracy and flexibility as standard. Compliance - particularly in regulated and bonded environments - is no longer optional; it’s fundamental.
Logistics today isn’t just about moving goods from A to B.
It’s about systems, controls, communication and people working together across multiple sites, services and timelines.
Willmotts has grown with those demands.
Evolving Capability, Without Losing Focus
As customer requirements have changed, Willmotts has adapted its capabilities to match - expanding well beyond transport alone into integrated warehousing, distribution and specialist services.
This evolution has included growth in palletised distribution at scale, investment in temperature-controlled trailers and bonded warehousing, and continued upgrades to fleet, sites, systems and training.
Most recently, Willmotts became a member of the Bonded Warehousekeepers Association (BWA), reinforcing best practice and compliance in duty-suspended operations.
Throughout that growth, the focus has remained the same.
“Logistics has changed hugely over the years, but the fundamentals haven’t,” says Dan Gray, Managing Director at Willmotts. “Our role is to give customers confidence - through strong systems, clear communication and people who take ownership when things don’t go to plan. That’s what’s allowed us to grow while keeping standards high.”
Every step forward has been driven by a simple question: What do our customers need us to be good at next?
What Hasn’t Changed
Today, Willmotts operates in a far more complex environment than when it began - supporting FMCG, food & drink, retail and packaging customers across the UK through a combination of transport, pallet network distribution and over 500,000 sq ft of BRCGS-accredited warehousing, including HMRC-bonded facilities.
While the scale and complexity have evolved, the underlying values have not.
Willmotts continues to invest in its people, its infrastructure and its standards - ensuring customers receive the same care, reliability and accountability that built the business in the first place.
Built for Today. Ready for What’s Next.
The logistics industry will continue to change.
Customer expectations will rise. Regulation will evolve. Supply chains will demand greater visibility, resilience and control.
Willmotts will continue to evolve with it - grounded in experience, shaped by real-world operations, and focused on doing the job properly.
Because longevity in logistics isn’t about standing still.
It’s about evolving - without losing what matters.
